SecurityDid you know that the majority of security threats come from inside a company, mainly from disgruntled employees?Security in the world of ICT refers to both physical security of equipment and electronic security. In this topic you will learn about all of the different types of security risks and what companies and individuals can do to counter some of these risks.

Task 1:

Use your internet search skills to compile a list of where security threats come from. Ranks the items on your list from the biggest threat to the smallest. Place a copy of your list onto your blog.

Task 2:

Have a look at the following presentation on security, be aware that most of the information is in the notes. You will need to save the file to your file and open it from there to be able to view the notes section – Security Presentation. Answer the following questions on the presentation as full sentences in your blog:
What are the three main categories of computer threats mentioned?

Which threat do you think would be the hardest to protect against and why?

Slide 5 lists the top ten security threats to businesses, which ones of these do you think are also a threat to personal computers in peoples homes. Explain why for each of your answers and rank the threats you select from biggest to smallest.

The treats are broken into three categories – Disaster and Normal Events, Accidental Errors and Malicious Actions. Disaster and Normal Events include things like external physical damage, Hardware malfunctions. Accidental Errors maybe things like unintentionally deleting files and other user errors. Malicious Actions ranges from Virus to physical theft, or anything else with malicious intentions.

Disaster and Normal Event could be considered the toughest to prevent as they are often out of your control. Viruses and hacking can often be prevented with a decent security system while accidental Errors can be prevented with proper training.

Included on slide five is a list of computer threats. It includes complacency, poor execution, virus attack, hackers and crackers, Trojan horses, denial-of-service attack, the disgruntled employee, mobile devices and data hijacking. Of these all of relevant to the home, as well as a company, excluding denial of service attacks or a disgruntled or naïve employee.

Moores Law – What is it?

Simply put Gordon Moore predicted, that the number of transistors in processors (and hence their speed) would be able to be doubled every 18 months. This was latter updated to also say that as the speed doubles the prices will halve. The following graph demonstrates how the power increases predicted by Moore have happened. (Not Attached)

Identity theft is a growing area of cyber crime and is one that can have the biggest impact on the victims. Do some research on identity theft then create an advert for others your age alerting them to the dangers or identity theft that includes the following:

Tips on protecting yourself from identity theft.

This advert can be in the form of a brochure, poster, animation, movie or any other form you like. Place your advert on your blog.

Task 4:

The most likely form of cyber crime to impact on the lives of teenagers today is cyber bullying. Create a survey to determine how aware students at your school are of cyber bullying and if they have been bullied or bullied others this way.

As this can be a sensitive issue you will need a way to ensure that peoples replies are anonymous so that they are happy to answer honestly. Consider the various digital tools that you could use to assist with this. When you have finished designing your questionnaire get your teachers permission to survey other students.

When you have completed your survey use appropriate digital tools to analyse the results (your teacher will help you with this). Discuss your survey results on your blog.

Task 5:

Use the survey results from task 4 to work out where the worst area of cyber bullying is at your school (eg. sms, email, chat etc.). When you have worked out what the biggest cyber bullying problem is devise a strategy to reduce the amount of cyber bullying that occurs.

Front PageWeb pages are used to share information with other people on the internet. There are many ways to create a webpage including:-Creating a document in word and then publishing it as a web page,-Writing HTML code,

- Using software designed to help with producing web pages such as Front Page or Dream Weaver.

This section will only look at using Front Page to make web pages. To create a web page in Front Page you will first need to load up front page and then start a new blank page. You can add pictures, text and backgrounds in a simular way to how you would add these to word. You can add as many extra pages as you require and put the information onto these pages in the same way.

When you have created all the pages you need you can link them using something called a hyperlink (what you click on when you are on the internet to move between pages). Your link can be made using icons, pictures or words for the user to click on. When you have the item you want users to click on created, right click on the item and select the option of creating a hyperlink. You will then be able to tell the computer where you want the link to take the users.

Task 1:

FrontPage looks like the following picture. Using FrontPage is the same as using Word for most things but as there are some differences. Here are a few of the basics of using FrontPage to get you started:

To add a blank page simply go to the file menu, select new then select blank page from the list that appears to the right of the screen. Then you can then edit to show whatever background, pictures and text you want on your page.

To change the back ground to something a bit more interesting than a white screen go to the Format menu click on Background and then select the colour, texture or picture you want. If you are adding a picture as the back ground you will already need to have the picture you want to use saved to your file.

To create a hyperlink (the link that people can click on to move to another page) you will first need to have made the pages you want the link between and to and have both pages saved. When this is done go to the page you want the link to be in and highlight the text or picture that you want to make the link from. Right click on your highlighted text or image and select Hyperlink. From this screen select the webpage you want to link to.

Move between the open pages you are creating by clicking on the tabs along the top of the screen.

All the rest of what you will need to do (add text, pictures, graphs etc.) is completed the same way you would in Word.

Important! – Before making your webpage create a folder to store it in. Place a copy of all the pictures you use in this folder, before adding them to your web page. If you don’t do this you will have problems with sharing your site later.

Create a webpage with a least two linked pages on a topic you are personally interested in. Save your finished web page in your ICT Web folder.

It is all well and good to go sticking lots of cool pictures, flashing text, bright colours and text on your webpage when you are learning how to use FrontPage, however their are some design principles and research findings you should consider when creating web pages. Create your own summary of good webpage design. Your summary should be a single webpage that uses as many of the principles of good web design as possible. You can choose to link to your webpage from your blog or to email it to your teacher. Whichever way you choose you will need to include all your pictures that you have used in your submission or they won’t show up on the finished page. If you place it on your blog you will also need to find an appropriate place to host your site. Search for hosting sites or ask some of your class mates what they use.

    Web Research SkillsIt is important to be able to search on the internet properly. This allows you to quickly find the information that you want rather than having to spend hours going in circles. If you have searched effectively you should only come up with about ten to twenty hits that contain exactly the information you want.Here are some tips for more effective internet searching:

    Describe your topic in a much detail as possible, if you want to know history of Sorell, Tasmania search for all three words as if you only searched for example “Sorell” you would get other places called Sorell and information that has nothing to do with the history of Sorell.

    Think of all the different ways to name what you are after. For example a car is also an automobile, vehicle etc. Remember not everyone calls the same thing the same name.

    Be aware of your spelling. If you spell something wrongly you may get information on that topic, but as the author has also spelt it wrongly it is likely that you have not found quality information.

    Use parenthesis around exact terms you want. For example “I want exactly this phrase” will only find result where those words are used together in that exact way. This is especially useful when you know a line from a poem, song, story etc. and want to find the rest of it!

    Using the word ‘and’ or a + sign between two words will only produce results where the search engine finds BOTH words on the site.

    Using OR between terms lets the search engine know you want sites with EITHER word. For example searching for car or vehicle, will produce a list of sites that name a car either way.
    Typing Site:au at the end of your search will result in you only finding Australian sites.

    Don’t forget that you can always click on advanced search where you are given lots of ways to narrow down your search.

    You should create a journal that should include justifications of the tips you have included, any issues that you have faced with the creation of the information product, and explanations of good / bad sites discovered when looking for information. Do your journal as a series of blog entries.
